It's only part of the Saxon charm of the area, which also includes unspoiled medieval villages with fortified churches, imposing UNESCO world heritage sites, traditional arts & crafts, all set in one of the most spectacular and pristine natural landscapes in Europe. Not to mention the most delicious food in Transylvania...

With a history dating back to the 13th century, Meșendorf has a story to tell and we are here to help you discover it while enjoying the serenity of the village life and its surroundings.

A Natural Paradise of International Importance: Ancient Forests in Balance with Traditional Farming

Meșendorf is located in the Tarnava Mare area, a designated Natura 2000 European protected area (part of a coordinated network of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats). Ancient oak and beech forests together with wildflower-rich meadows and pastures surround the tranquil villages developed around imposing fortified churches. This is an area where traditional farming is carried out in balance with nature and medicinal plants are plentiful and widely used in everyday life.

Biodiversity Paradise in the Heart of Transilvania

This unspoiled natural area is home to a rich selection of wildlife such as deer, fox or wild boar, but also to many species threatened in Europe and protected by the EU, such as wolf, bear or wild cat.

Birdwatcher's Heaven: Exploring Meșendorf's Avian Delights

The area is also a paradise for bird watching, the ambitious bird lovers having a chance to admire up to 55 bird species threatened in Europe, including the sparrow-hawk, goshawk or the corncrake.

Beyond the Noise, in Harmony with Nature: One of the Most Peaceful and Authentic Villages

Here you will discover Meșendorf, one of the most peaceful and authentic villages in the area. Away from the busy, national road and located at the end of the local, country road, Meșendorf is protected from noise and stress and integrates perfectly with nature.

Preserving the Past: A Jewel in Transylvania's Saxon Crown

Meșendorf, together with the surrounding villages, was founded by Transylvanian Saxons sometime in the 13th century and is organized according to a specific settlement pattern that has been preserved since the late Middle Ages, with an imposing fortified church as its core. The village life has maintained its special charm to this day and offers the visiting guest numerous opportunities to explore life lived according to old customs and the laws and rhythms of nature.

A Gateway to UNESCO Fortified Churches and Village Heritage

The village thus belongs to the Saxon region of Transylvania, currently home to one of the highest numbers of fortified churches dating back from between the 13th and the 16th centuries. Out of more than 150 well preserved fortified churches in the area, seven of them together with the villages they are part of have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Meșendorf, the fortified church on top of the hill together with the village road leading up to it and to our guest house are part of the national heritage.
